Guardsmen Squad

"Let's see them fight ALL of us!"

The billions of soldiers of the Imperial Guard form the Hammer of the Emperor. Equipped with flak jackets and lasguns, ordinary humans stand against Orks, Eldar, Chaos, and every other threat in the Galaxy. They prevail by sheer weight of numbers and the support of powerful tanks.

Guardsmen Squads can capture Strategic Points, Critical Points and Relics.

Unlike most other infantry squads, who can meet the minimum broken morale time as their morale naturally regenerates to the morale restore value, Guardsmen Squads have a minimum 12 second broken morale time unless preempted by a Commissar's Execute or Priest's Fanaticism.

Tactics

While most races have separate units for early-game Strategic Point capturing and frontline combat, Guardsmen Squads are intended to perform both roles. The problem here is that, in their initial state, Guardsmen make particularly poor troops. They inflict low damage and are incredibly fragile - their health and morale are comparable to Cultists, and while the reinforce cost for both Guardsmen and Cultists is the same, Guardsmen squads are more expensive (and take longer) to build initially (this is known as "Squad Tax").

Due to their incredibly brittle nature, it is imperative that Guardsmen are kept away from units with area effect abilities, such as the Eldar Farseer with her Psychic Storm (and, later, Eldritch Storm), and particularly Grey Knights coupled with a Librarian, as the combination of the Psychic Inquisition and Smite abilities can lay waste to entire squads of Guardsmen. Morale damage is also a big problem until Execute and, to a lesser extent, Fanaticism become available.

Grenade Launchers are available early in the game, long ranged and intended primarily to disrupt enemy troops, but also do fairly good damage and can make a significant difference when engaging theoretically stronger foes.

Plasma Guns are highly effective vs heavy infantry once they become available. It is wise to keep one or two commissars spread out through your firing lines to ensure morale stays high and firing rate is increased. Races such as the Orks and Necrons fear nothing more than a line of Guardsmen on Hold Ground stance firing Plasma Guns with unbreakable morale.

With the upgrades available from the Tactica Control and the attachment of a command unit (Commissar, Priest or Psyker), Guardsmen become more potent. Of particular interest are the Satellite Targeting and Weapon Specialization upgrades, and the aforementioned Execute ability, which both restores morale for all nearby troops and also doubles their rate of fire. With large numbers of Guardsmen, this can lead to a significant amount of firepower. Unfortunately, all of these require you to be at Tier 2.

When on the defensive, it's worth remembering that Guardsmen can be garrisoned within certain buildings (such as the Infantry Command) and can fire out from within. However, the damage they deal this way is likely to be less than that if they remain outside. Since bunkering is independent of both the number of units within the garrisoned squad and their morale status, it can be worth using this approach to get more use out of broken or wounded squads. The additional protection of the building also prevents enemy harassment from affecting the garrisoned unit’s morale regeneration.
