Haemonculus' Laboratory

Before they were enthralled by the Chaos God Slaanesh, the Dark Eldar were part of one of the most cultured and learned civilizations of the universe. That scholarly tradition continues, albeit in a more twisted fashion, in the halls of the Haemonculus' Laboratory. Here, sinister sorceries and the application of pain, misery, and death are brought to the aid of their brethren as research into increasing the combat effectiveness of their forces. Once the Haemonculus' Laboratory is complete, the Dark Eldar commander can access Squad Leader options and special units.

Tactics

As the Haemonculus' Laboratory is necessary to get upgrades and squad leaders for your infantry squad, if this building is lost squad leaders will not be able to be built. This leads some players to build multiple Haemonculus' Laboratory in the late game, when resources are available, around their base or in an ally's bases. This also allows for another production queue, cutting the total research time for all of the upgrades available in the Haemonculus' Laboratory. This is one form of a defensive strategy against deep-striking units such as the Space Marines Dreadnought or the Necron Flayed Ones.

The Dark Eldar have a great variety of potent researches available to them in Tier 1, all of which have very high power requirements. Because of their expensive generators and the need for the power-intensive Haemonculus, it is usually necessary to make some hard decisions about which researches are best left until after the Planetary Raid add-on is begun.

  • If Mandrake Squads, the Archon, or Hellion Squads are used at all, start with Poisoned Blades Research: it will dramatically increase their effectiveness, the research is fast and cheap, and will provide any accompanying Warrior Squads with slower, easier to hit targets.
  • If Warrior Squads are also on the field, Soulseeker Ammunition Research will dramatically improve their effectiveness, particularly against chasing fleeing foes. This research does not benefit Reaver Jetbikes, so it is unnecessary if they are the Tier 1 ranged unit of choice.
  • As powerful as the weapons provided by the two Tier 1 Wargear researches are, they are best left until after Planetary Raid is underway and more units that can benefit from them are closer to hitting the field. Their scope is simply too limited that early in the game to justify delaying Tier 2 for their high power cost.

If any Mandrake Squads are still on the field in Tier 2, pick up Daemonic Touch Research right away, even before Wraithbone Woven Battlesuits. It is absolutely necessary to maintain the effectiveness of this lowly capper unit in the increasingly intense firefights and provides large benefits for its low cost.
