Obelisk

The Necrons are not limited by their ability to requisition more advanced soldiers and weaponry, but drawing troops and equipment up from the depths is a difficult task even for their powerful technologies. By constructing Obelisks on Strategic Points and Relics, they can focus on the needed components of their buried army more easily, exhuming them with greater ease and greater speed.

Although Obelisks are the primary means for the Necron army to improve their unit construction, reinforcement, and research times, Critical Locations also give a 10% reduction to all three modifiers.

Note: Unlike other Necron buildings, only two Builder Scarabs can repair an Obelisk at the same time.

Tactics

Unlike all other races, upgrading your Obelisks provides no resource bonus whatsoever. Obelisks are therefore merely a means of defense. The first upgrade allows the Wailing Terror ability, which is an area of effect attack that can outright kill some lightly armored squads such as Sluggas or Guardsmen. The second upgrade is an extremely potent long range turret that also retains the original AoE attack. However, it can be somewhat of a gamble creating and upgrading since there is no real return on your investment.

In most cases it is better to leave Obelisks unupgraded when they are near to your base and easy to protect. The cost of replacing an unupgraded Obelisk is extremely low and it's accomplished very quickly. So it should only be done if you have a surplus or you are facing lots of harassment by your base and you need extra protection. Obelisks far away, on the other hand, should be fully upgraded so as to keep your reduced time for construction and research effects. In addition, Gauss Turrets can be useful for protecting Obelisks, as they have extremely good anti-infantry and anti-vehicle attacks once fully upgraded, all for a cost of 50 power.

Effects When finished the Obelisk gives the following benefits (limit of 66% on all three):
  • Research Time is reduced by 10% (does not effect Monolith, Obelisk, or Gauss Turret upgrade times)
  • Reinforce Time is reduced by 10%
  • Build Time for Infantry and Vehicles is reduced by 10%

The time bonus displayed is the portion of the maximum 66% bonus achieved.
