Relic Units
In Dawn of War, each race has a unique unit which can only be produced if a relic is controlled by the player. Research is also required, and production capability is typically only possible at or near the end of the respective race's tech tree. Some maps have fewer relics than players, and thus control of a relic can be of significant importance. There is no advantage, outside of extra resources, for capturing additional relics beyond the first.
Tactics
In team games with limited relics, it is advantageous to let friendly players with a powerful relic unit capture the relic. For instance, the Eldar relic unit confers population, production, and unit bonuses to the Eldar player, greatly increasing the size and power of their army. Since no other race grants similar bonuses, in the event that only one relic is available, let an Eldar capture it, rather than letting a race with little or no relic unit abilities capture it, such as the Tau.
